Upper elementary is such an important time in a students' life. They are preparing for middle school and are beginning to get involved in various activities. One important decision comes in the Fine Arts Department: the idea of joining band, orchestra, or choir. While many of my students have the skills needed to succeed in choir, the only true experience they have had with playing music is through percussion instruments. The recorder is such an amazing instrument! It is a cheaper alternative to a woodwind or a brass instrument but still teaches many of the same skills. Students will use many musical skills when performing: reading rhythms, reading note names, finger and hand coordination, tongue coordination, etc. Recorder, although considered a basic instrument, truly opens up musical doors for students.
