My Southern California public school is an innovative K-12 learning environment that aims to prepare students for college, work and civic participation. My students are diverse, enthusiastic, low-income, multi-lingual, and first in their families to dare to dream of college. Most of my students come from immigrant families and in spite of extreme poverty, are eager to create better lives for themselves. Education is their road map to a better life. 100% receive free lunches, leaving out the option to buy school supplies, college application fees and college-admission test prep classes. More than half of our 73 seniors have applied to 4-year colleges, with the rest applying to 2-year schools. For our first class of graduates, this is awe-inspiring. Regardless of their barriers, they haven't stopped dreaming of post-secondary education.
