My school is a high minority high school (35% black, 33% Hispanic) with 70% of all students on free/reduced lunch. Many of my juniors and seniors lack support systems, are homeless, self-supporting, transient, or have children. Many of them work full time; some have two or three jobs. Some just don't do well in a traditional classroom setting. Many have only known failure. That's where I come in. With my credit recovery program I help them catch up on credits and remediate GPA, making them graduation ready. I'm their Mom at school. Through my mentoring and this program, these students see that they CAN succeed and learn HOW to succeed academically. More importantly, they are better prepared to begin the rest of their lives. Many are able to successfully go on to college or technical school. It is a joy to have them come back and share their success. They are grateful to have been given the chance to change their lives.
