My students all have special learning needs and spend their time in a special education classroom setting. Some of my students have sensory needs that need a special area to be met. Others want a comfortable area to work on independent or cooperative learning activities. And all of them just need a cozy area to read! This project would give my group of diverse learners a special area to help them meet their sensory and learning needs! I noticed many of my students would find a spot on the floor to work together on their math or reading groups while myself and my classroom aides were working with other small groups. The spots my students chose were on the hard floor next to bookcases or shelves that offered no kind of comfort while trying to learn, yet they still chose to find a spot outside of their desks. My students deserve a special comfortable area to help turn their learning experience into a positive activity to work in small groups, take a calming break when overwhelmed or upset, or just to snuggle up with a book to work on developing their reading skills. This project would greatly improve our classroom environment and promote healthy sensory breaks, reading, and cooperation in a room where we work hard to foster a community of trust, safety, and support.
