  • Can You Feel the Love Tonight?

    Funded Mar 28, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donations. These props made our musical extra special. For the song 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight,' our cast was able to dance with tealight candles on a darkened set. The effect was absolutely magical. The fabric was used to create sashes and costume articles for the chorus. This production was an absolute success. Our students were able to shine on the stage in front of their families and friends. Thank you for supporting our spring musical. Everyone is looking forward to making musical theater a tradition at Gillespie school. I can't wait to start on next year's production!”

  • Hands-On Projects Bring Science to Life

    Funded May 8, 2024

Thank you so much for providing our students with science kits! These science kits have brought such joy and learning to our students, right when we really needed some new and exciting activities for the end of the year. Molding and casting the volcano was a huge hit with our primary students. Then when the volcano was dry, we went outside and made the volcano erupt!

One of the National Geographic kits I gave away as a prize for an 8th grade student who is always trying their best in music, and who is staying out of the fray when his classmates get out of hand. This student was overjoyed at receiving the wonderful prize, and I was overjoyed to have a great prize on hand to discreetly reward a student who truly deserved it.

The kids are bringing in 2 liters, and we are looking forward to making tornados to take home on the last day of school. Thank you for bringing this fun science lesson to Gillespie during the month of May.”

  • Invasive Species in Our Own Backyard

    Funded May 3, 2024

Thank you so much for supporting us again with your wonderful gift. These educational materials and animal care items have brought the learning and fun of having a pet in the classroom to the max. Freddie loves his new froggy 'bed,' and the kids are loving watching him discover this new addition to his environment. The frog food has been exciting, as well. The preschoolers love feeding him first thing in the morning. Learning that African Clawed Frogs come from sub-saharan Africa piqued their interest. We learned that African Clawed Frogs are actually illegal in several states, due to their invasive nature. After learning about the species and other invasives and their impact, looking at the world map took on new meaning. This has been a really fun hands-on, social and spirit boosting unit for our students in the classroom. Thank you again for helping us take the educational content of our classroom pet to new heights.”

  • Listen to My Beat

    Funded Apr 22, 2024

Thank you so much for this wonderful gift of headphones to our classroom community. The music classroom is a special place away from the school day where the kids enjoy expressing themselves. These headphones have allowed us to create and work towards perfecting our own tracks and beats using digital audio workstations (DAWs). This music-making activity can be successful thanks to your generous gift of headphones to the room. Kids have also been borrowing the headphones to complete assignments and testing in other spaces as well. These headphones have already had a huge impact on the educational experience of youth in the city. Thank you!”

  • Shake it, Then Store it

    Funded Mar 27, 2024

Thank you kindly for your donation of this storage unit to our music classroom. The classroom has very little built in storage for our instruments. The kids had fun assembling the Ikea unit. The experience of building the furniture also gave me a chance to form positive relationships with a few of our middle schoolers. Now, our instruments and classroom supplies have a home. This has helped make our space more 'zen,' which in turn sets a tone for calm, respectful and productive participation in music class. Thank you again for the storage unit and power strips.”

  • Sheet Music at Our Fingertips

    Funded Mar 28, 2024

I can't thank you enough for providing our music classroom with a printer. This device has made preparing for class so much easier. Being able to print out sheet music and worksheets in the classroom has been an absolute lifesaver. This practical item has greatly improved student learning and functionality in the classroom, and the eco tank printer ink is less expensive and lasts longer than traditional ink cartridges. Thank you so much for providing us with this Epson Eco Tank printer for use in music class.”

  • To The Finish Line

    Funded Mar 27, 2024

Thank you for your generous gift of wipes, crayons and stickers. These materials will help power this music classroom through the end of the year. Kids feel a lot better about completing work with new crayons than with old broken ones. They also will love being able to wipe their desks and work surfaces after class. We will finish out the year feeling clean and prepared thanks to you! The stickers will empower and motivate our students to try their best in music class. I appreciate your generosity and thoughtfulness greatly.”

  • Drumline Dreams

    Funded Mar 29, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation of plastic buckets to our classroom. I can't begin to describe the excitement the students and staff felt when the boxes were delivered. The buckets arrived in many large boxes from Home Depot, and were brought to the music room. The students were SO excited when they saw what was inside! We had a great first day playing the buckets. There are enough for most classes to sit one one, and drum on another. I can't thank you enough for your generous gift of buckets, which have energized and recharged my students during the fourth quarter.”

  • The Write Stuff

    Funded Mar 7, 2024

Thanks so much for providing our classroom with the basic supplies we need to continue learning until the end of the school year. These pencils, dry erase markers, paper clips and note cards have already had a positive impact on student progress in the classroom. Having sharp pencils when we need them makes it easy to get into the room and get right to work. We have been identifying notes on the treble and bass clef staff. This skill was difficult for many at first, but the students have been progressing and many who had struggled are now proud to be able to do this work with very few incorrect answers. Thank you again.”

  • The Lion King: Remember Who You Are

    Funded Feb 28, 2024

Thank you so much for supporting our school production of The Lion King Kids. Our cast has been hard and work rehearsing and memorizing their songs and lines. These costumes and makeup supplies will bring our production to life in May! Thank you so much for supporting musical theater in an equity-focused school on the south side of Chicago. The support you gave is truly appreciated by our students and staff. Without your help, we would still be scrambling for the costumes and makeup we need to make the show a success. Thank you.”
