I currently teach at the only all-girls public school in Washington DC called Excel Academy. My school is located in Ward 8 (one of the poorest in the city) and I work with the youngest learners in Pre-K3. Many of my students come from low-income backgrounds and all qualify for free and reduced lunch. In my class, we strive to promote a sisterhood that empowers and supports one another through our daily activities. The current pandemic has created various hardships on my students and their families while shedding light on the unequal distribution of essential resources. My goal is to continue to support my students during their first year and ease the transition to school in a positive approach.
