N. Senior High is located in the heart of Liberty City, one of Miami's oldest neighborhoods where many residents have been impacted by the national crisis of diminishing economic opportunities. As a result, too many of the community's youth suffer from lack of resources. However, the beauty of this neighborhood is magnified by its rich pride and culture. I have been given the opportunity to work with 65 freshmen, all of whom did not pass Florida's mathematics test in 8th grade. Their continuous struggle to achieve in mathematics has decreased their confidence in believing they can do Algebra. However, I have challenged my students to learn math in a way they have never been taught before. I have asked them to push themselves to figure things out on their own so they may one day think, talk, and write about math. They believe math is tough but they will soon discover that understanding math is indeed possible.
