For many of my students, owning a book is a luxury their families were not able to afford growing up. I was surprised to find out that they had not been read to as children, and out of my own funds I bought a few books in Spanish for them to read. My students eagerly devoured the first books, and asked whether I would be getting more for a class set. With 30-40 students per class, I realized I would need to draw on the support from others who are passionate about providing educational opportunities for our next generation of change-makers. My vision is to have a class set of books that my students have picked out -- books that they are excited to read. I hope to dedicate 30 minutes of every Friday to allowing my students time to get absorbed in their favorite book. Many of the titles they chose are the same books that sparked my own love of reading, and I look forward to my students getting that same joyful experience.
