My school first opened in 1966 and is located in a low-income region of Virginia. We currently serve a total of 1,250 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. 49% of households served by my school make less than $50,000.00 per year. Approximately 60% of my students are eligible for free or reduced-cost lunches. My school's population consists largely of Special Education students, new English language learners, and other low-level readers. Learning-disabled (LD) and English-for-speakers-of-other-languages (ESOL) students comprise 34% of our school's population. My school's overall standardized reading test scores are 4% below average. Students and staff at my school have already begun to utilize the library's new e-book collections on campus. Those who own e-readers are also enjoying the new e-books at home. However, 60% of my students cannot afford the necessary Internet access to use our e-books off campus.
