I am a special education teacher in a resource room, giving direct instruction to children in second, third and fourth grade. As a special education teacher, I teach in a variety of ways and need to familiarize myself with numerous teaching strategies and programs to meet each student’s educational needs. These children come to my room for intensive reading, writing and math instruction each day. My kids are energetic, love learning new things, and learn the best through unconventional ways. These items will be used daily in intensive instruction by up to 15 kids during our small and whole group instructional time. While all my kids are at different levels developmentally and academically, it is important to provide differentiated instruction to match each kid’s needs. These resources will be used for phoneme segmentation, blending, decoding, comprehension of both fiction and nonfiction text, sound manipulation, sentence formation, sight word recognition and word building. My kids are also in need of a listening center. My students can listen to their favorite books on tape, work on comprehension, build their understanding of language, develop a sense of narrative structure and listen to different writing styles. They can work together and collaborate to understand things as vocabulary, author’s purpose, sequencing and story structure. By building all of these skills, students will begin to gain confidence in themselves during reading, something that we struggle with. This confidence will build and continue with them in and outside of school.
