For the past few years, I have built my classroom library with donated books and books I've purchased from our local library's book sales. While I have a wide range of books to choose from, there is still a limit to the diversity of authors, characters and subjects. My students deserve access to books that reflect who they are and what they have experienced. I want my students to not only see themselves represented in the books that they read, but to gain exposure to diverse characters. There are so many modern books available that are by and about people of color, the LGBTQ community, women, that are often underrepresented in classroom libraries. By exposing my students to the diversity available in literature, I hope to raise excitement about reading. My current bookcases are too small to feature all of the books in an organized manner. I would like for my classroom library to have the feel of an inviting book store, where students are engaged in book selection. My students need to be able to see the books that are available to them. They need to easily see the variety of books in the classroom!
