Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, children's multicultural literature scholar, writes that books act as "mirrors, windows, or sliding glass doors." That is, literature has the potential to reflect our lived experiences, to provide us opportunities to see into the lives of people unlike ourselves, and allows us to take a step into another way of thinking about and making sense of the world. All students deserve access to rich and culturally responsive texts that both reflect their real lives and also provide them the opportunity to learn about others. Please consider supporting me, a first-year English teacher, in building a classroom library that will give my students direct access to titles that reflect and honor the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds they bring to the classroom.
