My students work in their notebooks everyday. Their notes, classwork, and scratch-work all live in a composition book that my 7th graders will make their own with creative covers. But it is very easy for 100 pages of graph paper to become an overwhelming mess! With the use of colors--colored paper, markers, pencils, and divider tabs--these composition books become easy-to-navigate resources. By assigning each unit a color and utilizing corresponding divider tabs, students can easily turn to find a section in their notebook; by printing notes in the color that matches the unit we are in, attention is increased, learning is enhanced, and memorization becomes easier; and by using colored writing utensils, students can annotate information as they see fit. Moving beyond black ink on white paper opens the door for students to think more creatively about math. These tools will allow students to create deeper connections to the work that they do in class, and can attract students that may not see themselves as mathematicians to engage with the material. I know that this time of year it can become overwhelming for a family to think of what purchases and plans need to be made. I would love to give my students fewer things to worry about this school year.
