My students are like most kids growing up in the inner city during these current times. Some of them may have misguided goals, some may seem to have little to no ambition. I believe that is the result of not knowing all of what is possible. What bothers me most is those who have dreams, but don't believe attaining them is truly possible... so quietly they have stopped hoping and trying. Consequently, there are scared to hope for anything because nothing has worked out so far, and they feel this is as good as it gets. Schools are the representation of the hope and value society has vested in its youth. How then can we allow to learn in environments that are either unsafe or ill-equipped? Despite their much-needed deceptive hard exterior they, like all children, need to have basic needs met, to feel safe, wanted, and someone who believes in them.
