General music students are typically middle to low performing students, who lack the desire, drive, or even interest to participate in the classic performance ensembles; band, choir, and orchestra. General music has been a place where these kids are stuck and are often lost along the way. Our school is a Title 1 school, which means that many of these students come from homes that fall below the poverty line. Attempting to get technology into a school that is surrounded by poverty, in a high-stakes testing system, can be nearly impossible. With a small grant, I was able to acquire a couple of old Apple computers and use the iLife programs to try and reach out to the students and say to them, "Music doesn't have to exist in a performance, it can exist electronically, emotionally, and expressively." The students instantly responded to composing on the Garage Band program, and realized that they don't have to play an instrument to be a musician.
