My inner-city, all minority school is in the heart of the nation's capital, but the dirty floors and old furniture do not feel special.
I selected the items in this project to help make my student's learning environment feel special.
The four Big Joe stack chairs and the four Rocker chairs will be used for choice-seating and to facilitate group discussions. These will be used all day - from Morning Meeting to independent student work time, etc.
The four stuffed animals - a horse, lion, cat, and dog - will become classroom character creature comforts. We will name them and refer to them. Students will get to hold them as comforts during class.
The giant connect 4 and LEGOs will be used for cooperative play. This is especially needed to build empathy.
And the stress balls, sensory toys, and fidgets will be used to relax students experiencing tough moments. Students who have experienced trauma often exhibit anger or sadness at school, and these kinesthetic toys will support calming down.
The LEGOs and toys will be used as comforts, for cooperative play, and as story telling tools.
