I was recently in a teacher training, seated in a hard chair at an uncomfortable table. As the morning went on, my discomfort grew. I squirmed, talked to my neighbor. By lunch, I found it difficult to absorb the teacher's lecture, and I noticed my colleagues were restless and whispering as well. It struck me as I left that the situation I had been in that day was the same seating setup I subjected my students to daily. If it was difficult for an adult to learn in those conditions, what was I expecting of my students? I realized something had to change and decided to implement flexible seating. Your generous donation will provide my students with a range of seating options that allow them choice and comfort in their classroom. I've already begun the process of implementing flexible seating by modifying existing classroom furniture- some desks have been raised to become standing workstations, and other tables have lowered to provide space for students who prefer to kneel or sit on the floor. However, some items are out of my personal reach. The school-safety-certified rug gives clear visual cues to help students stay in their own personal space, a skill that is still in progress for most of my students. The wobble stools and a stability ball are special products that allow students to "rock and roll" safely, moving beyond the strict "four on the floor" rule that most of us grew up with. Students will eventually have a menu of seating options to chose from. First grade students need to be able to work in a way that is comfortable and optimal for their learning style. The ability to evaluate what works best for themselves personally is a skill that will serve my students long after they've left the classroom.
