When children learn to play an instrument they are not just learning to play. They are learning coordination skills as well as listening and visual skills. Studies have shown that playing a musical instrument makes your brain react in a way nothing else does. They also are learning of a healthy way to de-stress, socialize, and create something beautiful. Ukuleles are any easy, affordable way to spark the interest of instrument playing in a child. Once they grasp the simpler concepts of ukulele playing, they can easily move on to other instruments, like guitar or banjo, while applying those same concepts and rules. In my classroom we are exploring bucket drumming, and keyboard, and I feel ukulele would be the perfect expansion of that exploration.
