My students attend an inner city public school in a high poverty area. The majority of my 3rd graders are English Language Learners who all qualify for free and reduced lunch. They are the most determined learners of literacy I have ever met but often struggle with reading and writing concepts that are unfamiliar to them due to the language barriers they encounter. Many of them have little access to books and learning materials at home, so they desperately depend on me for all of their literacy needs. 3rd grade is the time for readers to grasp the ins and outs of language and literacy before they are expected to "read to learn" opposed to "learning to read". I work diligently to target each students' literacy needs and engage them in effective lessons where my focus is incorporating technology to enhance learning.
