My students are 7th and 8th graders in a culturally diverse urban school. They are your typical early and pre-teens. They look for ways to define themselves with their parents, teachers and peers. They face a variety of challenges outside of the school including parents who are absent because they have to work afternoons and evenings, dealing with negative neighborhood influences, and sometimes making the wrong choices just to "fit it". They come to our school and know that it is a safe learning environment, with teachers who care (sometimes more than they want us to). But, it is not perfect. We have had instances of bullying and seeing the film "Bully" might help my students to know the real effect of words and actions meant to tear another person down, in a way that helps them to grow and become better citizens of our community.
