Reading is essential in a child's education, and, in our classroom, reading is the foundation to learning. Enhancing my students' senses is a component that I use to assist in their journey of learning. Novels and expository books enrich a child's knowledge by exposing them to rich vocabulary and building their knowledge. I want to create a classroom that will engage my students during learning by providing a vivid and bright colored classroom that will include a glow-in-the-dark environment. Our third grade classrooms are located below ground level similar to a basement, and our classrooms have no windows. A glow-in-the-dark environment fits in perfectly in this building. It would change the whole atmosphere for my students. The glow-in-the-dark classroom would be executed through all subjects. For example, children would become marine biologists for the day and explore the ocean’s abyss and all of its deep ocean life. In reading, we would read the novel Jigsaw Mystery: The Case of the Glow in the Dark Ghost and complete our thematic unit lessons in this vividly colored classroom. My students would be Context Clues detectives during group reading and use the black flashlights. The possibilities are endless in this captive and vivid surrounding. For 10 years straight, students at our elementary school have earned Exemplary status, and we have been recognized with the National Blue Ribbon Award twice. Our students are ranked number one in our district not only because of their scholarly and academic achievements but because they are wholesome and humble children, and they lead with both their minds and their hearts. My students deserve an out-of-this-world glowing experience during learning, one they will remember for years!
