The students who attend Mare Island Technology Academy are the bravest and most determined students I have ever met. Most of these 12-13 year old young people hear gunfire nightly, and are either first generation immigrants or are themselves new to the country, representing one of the most diverse cities in the United States. Mare Island Technology Academy is a college prep magnet school for undeserved youth. These students often do not have fluent English speakers in their homes. Since no sports or extensive arts program exists, students who attend this school have a clear directive that they want to go to college!
