The manipulatives, like the dominos and wooden towers, will be used to direct learning in independent and collaborative groups. For example, the wooden towers will be numbered. Each number will correlate with a question sheet. On the sheet students will be asked to work through Math problems, ELA prompts, or Social Studies and Science concepts. Students will have access to many different kinds of questions and prompts so a variety of interests and abilities are met. The dominos are another great math manipulative that will come in handy as quick draw numbers in use with basic operations to creating shapes for area and perimeter to collecting randomized data as we move into statistics. Access to learning materials that can be applied to a variety of subjects and purposes in the classroom will be imperative to working collaboratively in a combo 5/6 classroom. Clipboards and workbooks are tools that will be applied daily. Clipboards will allow students to move learning beyond their desks and to areas of the room where they can work independently or in small groups. The workbooks will be used as additional resources along with place-based education resources like Project Wet and Project Wild to take learning beyond rote regurgitation and into more project and community focused activities will still focusing on meeting the standards and, most importantly, reaching success for each student.
