Ninety percent of YES Prep students are first-generation college bound. Eighty percent of YES Prep students are economically disadvantaged. Ninety-five percent of YES Prep students are Hispanic or African American. Most students enter YES at least one grade level behind in reading. These may seem like dismal statistics. But... ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of YES graduating seniors are accepted into four-year colleges. YES stands for Youth Engaged in Service. Not only do my students have longer school hours, but they volunteer regularly in the Houston community. Because of this unique supplement of volunteerism to our curriculum, not only do our students go off to college, but they come back to Houston after graduation and give back to the community. YES is transforming the face of Houston education, one child at a time, and we are proving that any child can learn.
