My kids face a lot of challenges even before they get to school. Many of them don't have enough to eat at home, several don't have stable homes to live in, and many more suffer from a variety of learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and other impairments. Beyond that there are always at least 30 kids in the classroom on any given day, sharing very limited materials. We are chronically short of books and especially reference books. In spite of all that, mostly the kids are terrific learners -- fascinated by math and Outer Space and in love with reading and stories. When they run into a word they don't understand, it breaks my heart not to have updated and undamaged dictionaries on hand for them to use.
