Students will benefit from the stools, exercise balls, floor seats, etc. in multiple ways. They will be able to fidget, move and engage their bodies while staying focused on learning math strategies. Research shows that students learn best when they are comfortable and have the ability to move when needed. The exercise balls will allow students in small groups to engage their core muscles which then helps sustain attention. Students that aren't meeting in small group with me can pick and choose where they are most comfortable to play math games, computer stations, and practicing their strategies. Students can use exercise balls to keep moving while working, so they do not lose attention or get sleepy. Students more comfortable to sit on the floor can use clipboards and seat cushions to move around the room. When students are comfortable and the classroom feels more like home, the learning is authentic and becomes natural. The flexible seating gives students options to engage their bodies while they are learning new math strategies!
