I teach in a high poverty public school. Most of my students struggle in reading and are often vocal in “how bad” they are at reading. What I feel is missing in their lives is accessibility to high quality books! I have done a couple of chapter books this year to build their love of reading. We read “The One and Only Ivan” and they were hooked instantly. We finished this book on our last half day of school before our winter vacation. Almost all of the students chose to listen to the last few chapters than joining another teacher who offered crafts and movies. I don’t have a class set of the two books that all of my past classes enjoyed the most. I read “The One and Only Ivan” and “Because of Mr. Terupt” every year and the kids fall in love with the books. They BEG me to read these books. With a class set of books, all of my extension activities I conduct would be SO much simpler, and the students can enjoy holding the book and following along.
