My students are all English language learners. So on top of learning math, science, language arts and everything else that comes with being a seven-year-old, they are also struggling with the most difficult language: English. While our school is a high Title I school and most of my children qualify for free or reduced lunch, they never let it stand in their way. The teachers at my school take every opportunity to provide a quality education for their students. My kids never let their language deficit get in the way of their learning, and they work so hard, taking on double the work as some of their peers. Every day I see them face a world where they may not understand what is going on and it does not seem to phase them. They are some of the bravest souls I have ever met!
