My students come from different countries and varied backgrounds, all speaking languages other than English primarily. They are enrolled in a public middle school where they are expected to be moving toward proficiency in English, and tested on the same standards in English as their peers. Some have mastered their 'playground' English, but still need translations of the academic English to help them work toward mastering standards in their grade and content areas - math, science, language arts and social studies.
