Mindfulness has been scientifically proven to reduce the effects of stress and trauma on the brain's day to day function. The Yoga Mats will be used as a tool to release feelings of anxiety and stress from students who are constantly struggling in their classes. Attending a training such as this will allow the students to have the tools to help access their peace of mind regardless of the trauma they have endured. The drawing supplies such as markers, pencils, drawing pads, and construction paper will give the students another way to access their learning and voice through pictures after their sessions on the yoga mat. The whole time, relaxing meditative music will softly play in the background on the speaker in order to help create the relaxing learning environment. An alternative learning environment makes a big difference in absorbing the information in a meaningful way. Students in our school each day are faced with immeasurable circumstances that deeply impact their performance both academically and socially. Allowing access to resources such as mindfulness and yoga practices along with meaningful drawing, gives them an ability to better cope with the violence and turmoil that often plague the neighborhoods from which they arrive each day.
