I am an educator at an urban public Middle School in a large district in NC. My school is a Title I school with approximately 98% of students receiving free or reduced lunch (high poverty), high Exceptional Children (EC) population, and the student population is composed of 98 % minority students. I serve a sensitive population that is often three or more grade levels behind, and many have given up on succeeding academically due to not often experiencing academic success. Many of my students lack the appropriate background knowledge, motivation, and support to aid them in increasing their content comprehension, analysis, and retention to achieve on grade level expected standards. I truly live by the motto that EVERY child can learn, we just have to figure out how. Our youth are our future, if we don't cultivate them into thinkers and leaders, WHO will?
