Students are currently testing nutrient solutions for our hydroponic system, meticulously measuring nutrient concentrate and observing plant growth. One particularly exciting moment was when we saw the first tiny sprouts emerge-- on day 3!! The students were absolutely buzzing with excitement, comparing leaf development and discussing the science behind it. \r\n\r\nThe initial reaction from most students is a mixture of awe and curiosity. They are fascinated by the system and always start asking questions about how it all works. \r\n\r\nOur next steps involve expanding our hydroponic garden to include a wider variety of plants, and to begin documenting the data we collect. We're planning to also add an outdoor set of box gardens so we can transplant our small plants outside for larger growth. It's truly hands-on STEM learning in action!","fullyFundedDate":1733768163540,"projectUrl":"project/growing-joy-in-our-school-community/8911759/","projectTitle":"Growing Joy in Our School Community","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mayo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9232595_orig.jpg?crop=530,530,x130,y5&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742415748412","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jmslibrary"},{"teacherId":9232595,"projectId":8509361,"letterContent":"Manga and graphic novels are highly engaging and can motivate students to read more, improving their literacy skills and fostering a love for reading. This project did just that! Starting from the moment the boxes arrived, my students were desperate to open the boxes and take them home! I even had one student who tried to check out the entire Naruto collection in the box! Unfortunately, they hadn't yet been processed into the system so he couldn't take them that day, but he did offer to come help place barcodes on books and help organize them for processing! He actually came back three times to help! Because of this student, we were able to get all of our new Manga and Graphic Novels out for circulation within 2 weeks. The word spread quickly and I began to see students who had never come into the library. \r\n\r\n\"Wow, you have Stranger Things?\" Yes, yes we do! \r\n\"OMG the books are so much better this year!\" Well, I'm glad you think so! \r\n\"Can I check out XYZ books?\" Of course! \r\n\"Ms. Mayo, where are the Naruto books?\"--said multiple times per day!\r\n\r\nOur circulations are way up over last year and the year before! This is especially important because we have been attracting the most elusive students–adolescent boys! Middle School boys typically lose interest in reading at an alarming rate. Because of this project, we were able to put books on the shelves THAT THEY REQUESTED and that they WANT to read. In fact, our new titles represent HALF of the top 10 books this year! And graphic novels/manga have continued to represent over 56% of all books circulated this year. (The next highest genre is humor at 14%.) These books, while entertaining, are also highly diverse. Students have the chance to see themselves in these books while also learning about other cultures as well, which promotes empathy and community. Reading regularly can also enhance vocabulary, comprehension and critical thinking skills, which can translate to better performance in other academic subjects–so these gains have the potential to greatly affect our students' academic growth going forward. Thank you so much for supporting our students!!","fullyFundedDate":1726668949092,"projectUrl":"project/graphic-novels-and-manga-its-what-kids/8509361/","projectTitle":"Graphic Novels and Manga-It's What Kids Want to Read","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mayo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9232595_orig.jpg?crop=530,530,x130,y5&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742415748412","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jmslibrary"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2793","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":455,"numTeachers":34,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":49,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":38,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":64.8,"schoolId":2793,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Jackson Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Jackson Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/guilford-county-schools/jackson-middle-school/2793"}
