Despite all the adversity that my students face, they have shown an interest in good literature. Having accessible and appropriate reading materials with continue to foster their interests and encourage them to be life long readers. This diverse group of novels will provide exposure in a variety of literary genres as well as exposing them to positive role models both fiction and nonfiction alike. For example, in the novel Holes, Stanley Yelnats, comes from a low socioeconomic family and is forced to overcome adversity stemming from greed, corruption and apathy towards his well-being. Despite this, Stanley Yelnats becomes a positive role model and friend to many of those around him. There are a lot of similarities between Stanley Yelnats and my students, thus allowing them to see themselves in Stanley Yelnats himself. Stanley shows overcoming adversity is not impossible, sending a message that my students desperately need to hear.
