Imagine this...your teacher asked you to complete an assignment at your desk. As your teacher is asking you to do so, the door is slamming open and shut, two students are crying, you hear someone opening your favorite snack package. You also see that your classmate has earned a fidget for doing their job, and another classmate is taking off their jacket. Students who have Autism may have hyper-sensitivities (an over-responsiveness) or hypo-sensitivities (an under-responsiveness) to stimuli in their environment. This can involve lights, sounds, tastes, smells, balance, and much more. High walled, and enclosed work areas have shown to help students with these sensitivities learn in their classroom. With your help, my students could have access to dividers in our classroom so rather than focusing on all the outside noise, smells, and distracting lights, they are able to focus on their task at hand. This will allow them to continue to make progress in our setting, and increase their chances of being able to spend more time in the mainstream classroom.
