I teach high school social studies in a small, rural community that has been hit hard not only by the recession, but also by generational poverty. Many of my students come from split families and have to rely on themselves to be successful in school. I am the only full-time social studies teacher in the high school and see students for two of their three required classes (World History and Civics). I also see many of them again for elective courses: Women's Studies, World Cultures, and Current Events. Our school has to make do with what we have, and that is very little, but we have turned out some amazing success stories in the past (including being named a Bronze Medal School by US News & World Report) and I hope we can continue to do that in the future.
