My students have expressed a great interest in re-enacting the stories that we read. They were so excited to color, cut and paste to make paper bag puppets for our children's theater area in the classroom. Retelling beloved stories sparks the imagination, cultivates curiosity, empathy, literacy, courage, and self-confidence. Kids learn to collaborate and problem solve. Even the shyest student may find a voice through this medium. When students have the opportunity to generate art in response to literature it promotes the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness. The products that I have selected will help my students bring their ideas to life. The puppets are from stories that we read over and over again. The students are eager to perform and retell the stories. The construction paper, scissors and paints will provide them with additional supplies they can use to create props and scenery. These craft supplies will allow them to unleash their creativity in other ways, too. I have seen how art and choices can positively affect student engagement and literacy competence and student confidence!
