My students are all 2nd language students. Many of them are 1st generation Americans and are the first ones attending school on a regular basis. They started school not knowing much English, but over the years and by the time they have reached me, they have learned so much and are ready to learn a lot more. They are beginning to learn the importance of school and the value that it has. They are able to go home and teach their parents what they have learned and many of them are teachers to their own parents and teaching them how to read and write in English.
