My students love to read and write independently and we practice daily so that we will improve. They know that the only way to get better at reading and writing is to do so daily. I teach 2nd grade and this a critical grade to inspire the love of reading and writing among students. We implement the Daily 5 in which students choose among five options that foster independent practice. I teach in a school that is in a high poverty area with 95% of the students receiving free and reduced lunch. We really appreciate funding to help foster our love for reading and writing which in turn helps to open our mind to a world beyond our environment.
