Many of my students have found solace in reading as a way to escape some of the difficulties found in their daily lives. I want to encourage students to read true stories in hopes that they will be inspired by the lives of real people. They will be able to see how some have overcome adversity and realize that if other people can overcome, so can they. However, some of the books don't have happy endings. The goal will be to teach them life skills of empathy, compassion, determination, and the need to stand up for what is right even in the face of ridicule. The donations given will allow student to be inspired by true stories of struggle, success, and the need to do what is right. These books will also help students prepare for standardized testing. Nonfiction is becoming more and more prevalent in testing and Common Core standards. Reading is a skill and reading nonfiction is a skill students need more practice with. My students are excited to get their hands on any new books they can, and are constantly begging for more time in class to read. These book will be read!! Between the school library and my personal classroom library they run out of books quickly. The joy on their faces when I introduce new books is priceless. Thank you for considering my project. I truly need your support to help make this goal a reality.
