As a School Social Worker, I work with many of our students that come from “hard places.” These students may be in foster or kinship care, may have experienced traumatic life-changing events, parental incarceration, homelessness, or may have been exposed to substance use and/or domestic violence. Many of these students continue to live in poverty and face disproportionate challenges to healthy development, learning, growth. Developmentally, many of these students are hardwired for emotional dysregulation, predisposed to mental illness, and experience behavioral challenges that impact their ability to grow into their full potential. With appropriate supports and collaborative services from our community partners these students can find academic and social success. If given the opportunity these students learn skills and strategies for successful coping and cultivate resilience for future challenges.
