Hate that Cat, by Sharon Creech is a wonderful way to get students interested in poetry. The book is written and told through poetry. For my students who are used to sharing, there is something to be said when you ask them to crack open a brand new book. The look of awe that this has never been used except for them is amazing. The donation of a class set of books allows me to reach my students and open their minds and hearts to poetry the same way my own teachers did. The donation helps my class learn about prose, verse, figurative language, and what it means to express yourself through words. My class will learn to love and respect books. Starting off the year with poetry helps my students learn specific skills that will be applied all year and in the years to come.
