Our school is in an impoverished inner-city neighborhood in North Carolina riddled with many obstacles and challenges. Our school population represents many countries from all over the globe. Many students are first generation Americans whose parents speak little to no English and have little formal education. We also serve a significant refugee population. Most of my students are being raised in poverty and are exposed to violence in their neighborhoods frequently. Many of my students have scored on the lowest level on the state test in literacy. Regardless, all of my students want and desire to be successful! They are resilient, big-hearted, and learn most efficiently through visual representation, cooperative learning experiences and concrete, real world hands-on activities that deal with complex ideas.
