Students will begin playing the Soprano Recorder in January of 2018. We play the recorder in third grade for a number of reasons. It is the students' first introduction to a melodic instrument. When playing the recorder, students are introduced for the first time to reading music on the staff. Students must build many skills to be able to play successfully including breath control, fingerings, reading notes and rhythms, and balance their sound in an ensemble. It is truly a whole-brain activity! The recorder is the gateway through which students travel towards band and orchestra ensembles. Playing the recorder forms the foundation upon which students build their abilities when they move on to other wind or string instruments in upper elementary and beyond. Even if a student chooses not to join an ensemble, the skills they learned playing the recorder will transfer to numerous other musical environments such as choir and composition. Thank you so much for considering this project, the students will very much appreciate being able to take their recorders home at the end of May.
