Many of my students are not given the opportunity to be "children" at home. So many of them are placed in circumstances where they are forced to take on adult responsibilities and are never given the opportunity to develop in the neutral, age appropriate environment that is necessary for them to develop . Our playhouse center will give the students a safe environment where they can use their imaginations and play out different scenarios. The center will also provide an environment where they will be able to learn and practice their socialization/interaction skills with children their own age and at the same time give me an opportunity to assess where I may need to adjust my curriculum. We have a small sink, cook top, table and chairs, and refrigerator in our playhouse center. If I can provide my students with pots and pans, dishes and silverware, a variety of foods, a small comfy chair, dolls and doll clothes as well as a cleaning set. It will allow their imaginations to go wild. They will be able to pretend play that they are moms and dads, as well as cooks and chefs. This type of pretend play helps children to realize that they can be anyone they want to and with this comes a desire and strength to grow and explore.
