More than 95% of my students come from economically disadvantaged homes. For many of them, the only real meals they get are the breakfast and lunch they eat at school five days a week. Many of the parents are struggling to provide for their children by working 2 or 3 jobs at a time. Because many of our parents are not well-educated themselves, they tend to work in very low paying positions. They are unable to help with homework not only because they aren't home but also because they often don't understand how to do the work themselves. We try to meet the needs of our students and their families as best we can, but with needs so great, sometimes we could use little help ourselves.
