I teach fifth grade in a Title I school. Most of my students come from backgrounds of generational poverty. For some of my students, the ability to read is the one thing in this world that is their own, while others have not yet discovered the love of reading. Each day, the 22 students who enter my classroom step into a world beyond their families' financial limitations. Many of my students receive additional services for learning disabilities. I read to my student on a daily basis and give them time to read on their own. During these times they settle in, listen, ask questions, imagine, and most of all they see what reading can offer: knowledge, adventure, and the ability to be whatever you want. This is why I am working to build a classroom library - to provide my student the benefits reading has to offer.
