This beautiful instrument has given my students another exciting way to experience rhythm, steady beat, and ensemble music-making through hands-on learning.\r\n\r\nWe have been using the djembe during our rhythm activities, movement lessons, and percussion ensembles. One of my favorite classroom moments was using the drum to provide a steady beat while students moved around the room. Students listened carefully to the djembe and adjusted their movements as the tempo and rhythm changed. It was wonderful to see them responding to the music with their whole bodies while strengthening their listening and beat-keeping skills.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the djembe, they were immediately curious and excited! They wanted to hear it, learn how it was played, and, of course, have a turn playing it themselves. We have been learning proper playing technique and exploring the different sounds we can create on the drum. Students especially enjoy discovering how one instrument can produce such a variety of tones.\r\n\r\nNext, we will incorporate our djembe into more percussion ensembles, call-and-response activities, folk songs, movement experiences, and student-created rhythm compositions. Students will have opportunities to take turns being the musical leader, creating patterns for their classmates to echo and using the djembe to help keep the ensemble together.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students another opportunity to experience the joy of making music together. This djembe will be used across many grade levels and for many years, making your generosity an investment that will continue to impact countless young musicians. One of my favorite moments has been watching students notice a book on the shelf about a musician we were studying and immediately ask if we could read it together. Having the covers displayed where students can see them has sparked conversations, questions, and genuine curiosity about the people and stories behind the music we hear.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new bookshelf filled with colorful books, they were excited to explore! Instead of our music books being tucked away, students can now easily see their choices and gravitate toward titles that interest them. I especially love seeing students use a few extra minutes at the beginning or end of class to browse the collection and discover something new.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue building our music literacy area and incorporating the bookshelf into our musician and composer studies, read-alouds, listening lessons, and music learning centers.
