In using straws and connectors, students will be able to see how geometry is used in designing and construction in the real world. They will be challenged to build geometric shapes and solids, compare them, and experiment with how they might best be used in supportive structures. They will also be working collaboratively in order to help them learn the importance of team work and getting along with each other. Another use of the straws and connectors will be to practice measurement. First, they will build line segments and measure what they build. Then, they will build polygons and measure the perimeter. They will also be challenged to build polygons in which area can be measured. Finally, they will be asked if they can build these shapes when given the measurements. Students will also get to use the Crayola markers for displaying what they learned by drawing posters, brochures, and creating dioramas that will be used as alternative assessments.
