My students need to be exposed to the laws, constitution and government that keeps our country running. The requested books will expose my students to various types of literature as it relates to informational text as well as fictional text. When the commissioner for education made the decision to allow the American Institute of Research to compose the new standard assessment for the state of Florida, the main goal was so that our students can leave the classroom more college and career ready. The new standards also allow teachers to help students to make real life connections to the material and lessons that they are being exposed to. The text I want my students to experience this year will help them to not only be successful on the state summative exam, but to also draw real life connections, become model citizens, because they will know how they fit into the democracy, and contribute greatly to society. I've collaborated with an amazing teacher from a Montessori school who shared some awesome thematic lessons with me that are aligned to the standards! In the state of Florida, civics and government are usually taught in high school so we are giving our students an advantage. The next theme that will be taught is directly from Florida standards for 3rd grade, which is: students will be able to determine the central lesson, message, main idea and correlation of events using folktales, fables and myths. This standard specifically teaches kids about life lessons that can be derived from folktales, fables, and myths. Text such as the boy who cried wolf and tortoise and hare, to name a few, are text that will meet the state standards as well as teach students lifelong lessons about cultural norms, patience, and respect!
