For many students, the key obstacle in AP Literature is the amount and level of reading. AP Literature often requires students to read advanced texts that are overwhelming to comprehend, much less examine closely and then write about. Furthermore, the diversity in my classroom means that I have students at all levels regarding reading skill and fondness of reading. Hence, the need to update our collection with texts such as "Cry, the Beloved Country". This story is powerful, engaging students in examining relatable themes such as father-son relationships and the nature of injustice. Most of all, the Paton's language is beautiful and rich without being what is, at least to many students, antiquated and difficult. Being able to use this book in class would allow students to build confidence in close reading and analysis before jumping into the more difficult texts of earlier centuries. My hope is that "Cry, the Beloved Country" will reduce their frustrations with the reading load and increase their enjoyment of literature itself.
